The architecture draws inspiration from the Mughal period with intricate details in stone and wood, red-sandstone colonnades and the centrepiece of the property a large marble courtyard. “With the careful and sensitive restoration of what was an old haveli, called Haveli Dharampura, slowly going to ruin we have been able to showcase to the world the architectural glory that Daharampura was once known for. As an ardent Dilli Wallah (someone who calls Delhi home) I have grown up on a healthy diet of the historic temples and old houses that dot this endlessly fascinating city. Dharampura has everything that a place demands for one to enjoy the romance and wonder of Delhi’s history. Temples, havelis and many beautiful buildings that date back to the late 19th century. They all contribute to the region’s unique feel and character, and this is why I am doing my bit to save the Haveli Dharampura. Along with my father, we want to restore our home in a way that Dharampura is conserved and serves as an example of how heritage city can be preserved and remain relevant today. We cannot afford to let a place of history slip into oblivion. How else will we champion Delhi's case to be listed as a UNESCO world heritage city?
Built more around 200 years ago, Haveli Dharampura derives its name from its locality. ‘Dharampura’ was named after the word ‘Dharam’-religion, probably due to the presence of many Jain temples and the historic Jama Masjid in the area. The documents we have for the Haveli Dharampura informed us that the Haveli belonged to a Delhi Muslim family till 1869 when the grand home passed on to a Baniya family (mercantile caste). In 1982 the Haveli Dharampura was passed on to an adopted son who belonged to the Jain Community. The once grand Haveli had by now been reduced to a run-down building rapidly going to ruin. In 2010 the restoration and conservation of the Haveli Dharampura was started, and it took nearly 6 long years and 50 odd workmen under personal supervision to return the Haveli Dharampura to its former glory. It took in fact 3 years just to stabilize the structure. At first the idea was to open the property as a museum to showcase and promote the preservation and conservation of Delhis heritage buildings. However, after the 4th year of the restoration work, when the beautification work started, the idea of re-purposing the grand home as a Boutique Hotel was born, sharing a beautiful piece of Delhi’s heritage as the perfect home from home for visitors to this Dilli Wallah’s home.
